Preparing to Move?

Preparing to move as a homeowner involves several steps to ensure a smooth transition. Here’s a checklist to help you stay organized:

1. Plan & Organize (2–3 Months Before Moving)

  • Create a moving timeline with key tasks and deadlines.
  • Declutter & downsize by donating, selling, or discarding items you no longer need.
  • Research moving companies and get estimates or plan a DIY move.
  • Gather moving supplies like boxes, tape, markers, and packing materials.
  • Take inventory of valuable items and documents.

2. Financial & Legal Preparations

  • Notify your mortgage lender if selling your home.
  • Transfer or update insurance (homeowners, renters, auto).
  • Change your address with USPS, banks, subscriptions, and important institutions.
  • Cancel or transfer utilities (electricity, water, gas, internet) for the move-out and move-in dates.
  • Schedule home inspections & appraisals if selling.

3. Packing & Logistics (4–6 Weeks Before)

  • Pack non-essential items first, leaving daily essentials for last.
  • Label boxes clearly with room names and contents.
  • Take pictures of electronics before disconnecting wires for easier setup.
  • Secure important documents (birth certificates, passports, deeds) in a separate folder.
  • Arrange transportation for pets and special items like pianos or artwork.

4. Final Preparations (1–2 Weeks Before)

  • Confirm moving day details with movers, rental truck providers, and storage facility.
  • Confirm storage unit is large enough for all of your items. Make sure you have your access information and know where your unit is for moving day.
  • Pack an essentials box with toiletries, medications, snacks, and first-night necessities.
  • Do a deep clean or hire professionals for both old and new homes.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials like paint, propane, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Make a plan for kids & pets on moving day to keep them safe.

5. Moving Day

  • Do a final walkthrough to ensure nothing is left behind.
  • Check utilities at your new home.
  • Direct movers on where to place boxes and furniture.
  • Items in storage: leave items that you need to access frequently towards the front of your unit. Also, keep your keys in a safe location but not all on the same key ring.
  • Inspect new home condition before settling in.
  • Unpack essentials first and take it one room at a time.
